Gentlemen
Got down to the business end of being able to remove the Damper.
Does anyone have any hints ,tip or advice of what to do while I'm down there.

Go the damper off (almost) just have to lift the engine 2"
The mounting rubber look OKish
But as I have to lift the block a little to get the damper off I'm wondering if I should replace them
They're £90 a pair - is there any way to test them?
And does anyone know if new ones are any good?

Hello Mickey, I have been following your post with interest because at sometime in the future I'm going to have to take the radiator out of mine as I managed to break the drain tap off the other week. How hard was it to get the grill and radiator off and leave the frame in with?
Anyway back to engine mounts. I don't think there is a test as such. Visual appearance is a good indicator, are there any surface cracks in the rubber? If so it's best to change them. You can change them with the radiator in place if you choose to leave them for now, a bit fiddley but do-able.

Fairly simple to get the rad out - I write it up.
Got the damper of with a bit of canny bodging and the best Christmas present my wife ever given me.
Long handled pliers from a charity shop. Good round the car, good round the house. etc.

I used it to release the tension on the cross bar so I could slip the damper out without having to remove it - worked just fine

I am now waiting for a refurbished damper to come from Beales Engineering (cold cuts for Christmas for the kids)
Meanwhile I'm sorting things out for the rebuild.
Are there any jobs anyone would suggest while I've got the front off.
I sort of tempted to look at the timing chain but under the rule 'if it ain't bust' I'm not sure I should

Check the water pump bearings and pump some grease into it.

I'll have the tape tunning.
I tapped the metal Up/Down pipe that connects the rad to the water-pump/heater and a corroded hole appeared in the elbow so I'm off to find a bent hose I can use as a replacement if I cut it off higher up.
I'll bear you warning in mind and have plenty of lube on all part
