DB18 SS Rear Axle

Post by tpickering »

I have just changed the "oil" in the diff.on my recently aquired 1950 SS and was shocked at how filthy the old oil was.
Black as your hat and like treacle and has obviously not been changed for many years.

Also noticed that both rear hub seals are leaking oil,yes they will need changing but the main cause of the leak I suspect is due to the diff. breather being blocked with mud etc. and as it gets hot the pressure increase inside the diff forces some oil past the hub seals.

As soon as the car returns from having a new hood fitted I am planning a complete rebuild of the rear end to include diff. hubs, shock
dampers ,springs and brakes.

Trevor, good point about the breathers. Well worth checking (they hide underneath the axle, at each end of the tube next to the plate that holds the back-plate. On our empress they were covered and invisible.

IMO, when you change the hub seals, it’s worth adding a paper gasket to the half-shaft end where it mates to the hub, as oil can get that far and do the same damage to brake linings.

Don’t forget the pinion seal

Thank you for the reply and the good advice about adding a paper gasket.
The leaking oil has already damaged the brake linings so it's new linings all round!
What are the pros and cons regarding riveted or bonded linings please?

Thanks

Trevor

The diff breather is threaded plug with a small plunger and screws into the diff housing, as illustrated. The 2 holes adjacent to the brake plates aren’t breathers, they’re oil drain holes for oil that’s leaked past the oil seals, the idea being to keep it away from the brake linings. If oil has been draining from these holes it means the oil seals need replacing.

Use bonded linings.

Before fitting, file a chamfer on the end of each lining - and also a slight chamfer along the sides to allow the lining to seat more readily if there is any wear ridge in the drums.
