LA10 Worm Wheel Replacement?

Post by lilykill »

Has anyone replaced the worm wheel on a LA10?
I flushed the diff today and the oil inside had no 'bits' but the worm wheel itself does have some heavy pits and a bit more back lash than I would like. It seems like this is just built up over its life due to its age and is most likely the original worm wheel.

I possibly have a machine shop that could make one under retail value but wanted to know if there is anyone in particular that knows where to get one or have a replacement one cut.

p.s. the drive pinions look fine so it looks like it was just direct oil pick up from the worm shaft.

If you can read the numbers on the worm wheel, it’s possible that I may have a new spare. The Daimler 15 and Lanchester 10 share many parts.
The wheel is generally gear hobbed and generally needs a special tool to cut the form.
I believe the bronze should also be centrifugal spun if you go for getting one made.

Ok I'll give it a look tomorrow morning, is it stamped into the side of the part like the rest of the parts on the car?

I do have a 7.38 ratio one but the numbers don’t match but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t fit.

If you have any measuring equipment we can get most of the way to knowing if it might fit.
Sometimes the numbers don’t match as they were made by more than one company and also for different makes of car also.

Ok, can you post an image of the whole wheel and whem.I get a chance I'll see what I can measure of it and do a bit of a sketch of what it looks like to compare it to.
