LD10 Lucas inspection lamp socket/charging socket

Post by mikemillen »

Does anyone know if the plug to fit the Lucas inspection lamp socket/charging socket on the Briggs-bodied cars is available anywhere?

If you want a socket rather than the two separate red and black connectors that screw into a dashboard, here's one but it won't last long at the money being asked :

If you want the two loose sockets, various sellers have them but be careful how much you pay. Vintage Supplies keep them :

Is it a Barker or a Briggs bodied car you have ? The reason I ask is that all the sockets will be too short to fit through a Barker dashboard although a small plate could be made up to house them, but you probably know that.

It's on a series 2 Briggs.
It already has the original Lucas socket on a bracket underneath the dashboard.
(Well it did, but I removed it, thinking it was an addition by a previous owner).

If I could find a plug to fit it, I'd put it back on the car.
If I can't find a suitable plug for it, then I'll leave it off.

My socket is round and has two recessed pins; the plug would have to be round with two holes to fit.

When I'm next at the car I'll photograph the socket and post it here... maybe it isn't the original?
It did strike me as odd that it would have pins that could be shorted by inserting anything metal, connected to the battery.
I would have expected to see a socket with holes for plug pins, not the reverse.

Hmm... I've just done a load of Googling for Lucas Inspection Lamp Sockets and I'm coming to the conclusion that my socket isn't the original, after all.

I'm pretty sure that the socket that was attached to the bottom of the dashboard on my car is not the original.
For one thing, it's marked "Bulgin" and not Lucas.

This is what it looks like:

Has anyone seen one like this?

I think I've got something very similar under the passenger side dash in my '53 14
I had no idea what it was.

Seems they were a popular plug in all sorts of vintage electronics
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274819587774 ... Swmhtfr7gc

It looks like this inspection lamp has the correct or very similar plug and comes with adaptors for Lucas plugs

If it's wired the same as mine was (permanent 12v) then try not to poke anything metal into it... you could be in for a nasty surprise. :D
