Engine removal in Briggs LD10

Post by mikemillen »

There's a good chance that I'll have to remove the engine from my Briggs-bodied LD10 to resolve an as-yet undiagnosed problem.
The car is under a Clarke temporary garage, so no roof trusses to attach a hoist to. I'm hoping to fabricate a frame or acquire a portable engine hoist.

What I don't know is what's the easiest way to remove the engine and what specific problems might I encounter?
I'm hoping I can unbolt the bell housing and leave it and the gearbox in the car. Is this the best approach?
It's suggested that the best way to approach the job is by first removing the front bodywork. What difficulties can be expected in achieving this?

I'm wondering if it's feasible to jack the engine up from underneath to allow the sump clear the front crossmember and then slide it forward and out, assuming the front bodywork's been removed. Maybe I'd have to remove the gearbox from inside the car first?

If anyone's taken the engine out of an LD10 I'd appreciate any tips they might have.

I can only relate how it's done on the Daimler DB18 Consort. On that car, the entire front wings and radiator and apron all come away as an assembly fairly easily (3 bolts either side holding rear of each wing to body, 2 nuts holding the radiator into the front of the chassis, then detach hoses and wiring, and 2 people can lift the whole lot off). The gearbox is then detached from the propshaft, the engine and gearbox weight taken up, gearbox and engine mounts undone, then engine/gearbox come out together, with engine tilted upwards at ~45 degrees (IIRC), and either move engine/gearbox forward, or push the car back.

On either car, the problem with removing the engine and leaving the bell housing and gearbox behind, on re-assembly, will be lining the gearbox back up with the fluid flywheel. Also, if the LD10 is same as the DB18 cars, the gearbox comes out underneath the car anyway.

Mike, have you had a look at Darren Watkinson's website? You may find what you need there or contact Darren. Easy enough to access from the club website's LD10 page https://www.dloc.org.uk/ld10

Not entirely. :-)

It is useful by advising that the best approach is to remove the bodywork, but there's not much else regarding the actual process.

^ I noticed that too.

Front bodywork removal is similar to the Daimler DB18 Consort ....
8 - With assistance, lift the whole front body assembly off the car (complete with radiator, headlamps, grille, wings, outer and inner panels, etc.)

So -- I'd guess that the engine comes out same as on the Consort i.e. with gearbox attached, lifted up at ~45 degrees (or less)

I see that in cylinder head removal http://ld10.awardspace.co.uk/bay/Cylhead.htm it says

34 - Remove the cylinder head by slackening the nuts a turn at a time, in the order specified on the diagram (Figure ??) until they are all loose. This will ensure there is no warping of the head due to undue pressure from the nuts. They can then all be removed in any order.
35 - Break the seal on the head gasket by giving it a few smart taps either side with the leather mallet. If this will not do the job, insert a screwdriver in the FRONT of the engine between the head and the block and gently lever upwards whilst giving the sides of the head smart taps with the leather mallet.
36 - Wiggle the head around to completely break the seal and remove. Try to lift it as vertically as possible to avoid damaging the threads on the attachment studs.

So is it agreed that I should leave the gearbox attached and take it all out as a lump?

It will be easier to split if needed once out of the car but is definitely easier on the refitting as a lump

On the Daimler DB18 Consort you have to get under the car to remove the gearbox so on that car, if removing engine, it's easier to remove whole lot as one lump.

But I noticed in LD10 gearbox removal here http://ld10.awardspace.co.uk/bay/env75.htm and here http://ld10.awardspace.co.uk/bay/gearboxremoval.htm , the gearbox can be taken out from inside the car and then put back the same way. So you could
1. remove front wings etc etc etc
2. remove gearbox
3. remove engine

Having said that, it's probably less hassle to remove as one lump and split when out of the car.

This thread has been very useful for me, so thanks Mike for asking, and for the responses. I need to replace the oil seal on my LD10 transmission, and had thought that you need to take the engine out to do it, which I dreaded. However it seems on reading the references in the answers above that since the gearbox can be taken out in the car, while leaving the engine in place, then I won't need to take the engine out to replace the flywheel oil seal. Is that right? I'm still not sure whether I could get at all the bell housing fixings.
Thanks
Tom
