Just in case its still a conundrum, I just happened to spot this 1948 LD10 for sale on the Car and Classic website https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1352661, it has been off the road for a few years, I only noticed this earlier posting as I did a search on the registration number on the Forum.

Whilst posting, another LD10 is for sale on the Car and Classic website - a 1950 LD10, registration NHW 432 is up for auction in July https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1346182 parked up in a garage 20 years ago apparently and not used since. Guide price is £1000.

These may be of interest.

First post, so please be gentle!

I was the lucky purchaser of NHW432 at auction in Stroud a few weeks ago. The car is recognised by the DVLA computer and I have applied for a V5c in my name with a change to historic status rather than the '25 year tax exempt' status shown on the 1997 V5.

The car is in quite good condition considering the lack of activity for the last twenty one years and had obviously been stored in a dry garage. Work is under way to recommission the car rather than restore it. It's now running but still needs some work on the brakes. Mileage is 67,000; it's remarkably original and hasn't been messed about .
Work continues to take to the road 'soon'.

Going back to the original question, it could be that someone sold the number on and in order to do so they needed and MOT and illegally obtained one.

When I bought my 15 the original number had been taken off it and the car had been sorn for 12 years, but it had a fresh MOT. It could not possibly have passed an MOT. There was not a single front light on the car and no working rear lights, there was a stub of exhaust pipe only, the tyres totally shot, and the brakes were seized.

Begs the question why do the DVLA allow these illegal number robbers so much rope?
