Consort front wheel bearing

Post by GrahamH »

My osf bearing is starting to make a noise, is it adjustable on a consort and is it a diy job to change if needed?

Thanks

Ans: yes, they’re adjustable, and yes, it’s a DIY job. However, if one or both are making a noise and there’s more than minor free play in the road wheel then one or both are probably U/S. (There are 2 taper roller bearings plus an oil seal.) They’re dead easy to inspect once the hub has been removed from the stub axle.

Graham

Steering column coming off at the weekend.

The wheel bearings and seals are available from just about any bearing stockist. There’s a number on the side of the bearing and that’s all they need to get you a replacement. I paid £30 a side for mine from - and I promise this is no relation - https://www.emmett-enterprises.com/

Honest it’s just a coincidence!

The story goes like this:
It was a Friday afternoon and I took off the rear drums to find the linings soaked in oil. Where could this come from?
Marcel knew. It’s back axle oil and it creeps up the tread on the half shaft so you need to seal it with thread sealer. While I have it in pieces I decide to look at the bearings and they are worn. No idea how I can get some more (apart from David Beales) but I wanted to complete the job that weekend. Got on the Internet and searched Bearing Suppliers near me. The first to come up was Emmett Enterprises in Stockport. Now I said to myself that must be a sign.
I called them, they asked me for the number on the side of the bearing, oh yes we have that in 3 brands.
Perfect, what time do you close?
Oh hell I wanted to do the job over the weekend.
Well, I’ll take them home, you come to mine with £60 cash and they’re yours.
So off I went to Stockport with the guys home address and got them.
Now that’s customer service!
Oh - and he had new seals to suit as well :-)
